Limey Packet Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Hello, If one got a HawkHost VPS, would they be allowed to host game (e.g. MMORPG, MUD, etc.) servers on it? Thanks in advance. Quote
Brian Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Absolutely! We place fewer restrictions on the VPS accounts than shared hosting since the environment is 100% customizable and yours. Quote
Limey Packet Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 Ok, so, just in a little more detail, what isn't allowed? I know nothing that would annoy people, break laws, or in any way be considered "mean" or "annoying", but is there anythig besides that that would restrict one's use of a VPS? Quote
Tony Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Well it would be things that are against our terms of service or acceptable use policy which are not allowed. Keep in mind VPS's are not ideal for game servers. It might run simple games but it wouldn't run your battlefield bad company 2 server or anything like that. Quote

Keep in mind Tony there are emulation servers for most MMO's and such so VPS actually perform admirably for these. Now if you're referring to solely FPS type games a lot more goes into it making a VPS not an ideal solution. Quote
Raymond Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 If your referring to an Runescape Private server than probably not. As this is 100% illegal Quote
Limey Packet Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 If your referring to an Runescape Private server than probably not. As this is 100% illegal Indeed. The use of emulation servers depends fully on the legality. I was really planning to write an original MMO in the future and possibly host it here. Quote
Raymond Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 @Limey as long as it doesn't take too much resources like user wise, you should be golden . You could probably max out a total of 200-300 people maybe even more on a VPS. Quote

Once I started to get up to 200 or so connections at any given time I would either get another VPS as a second game world or move on to a dedicated server. Quote

Unfortunately Raymond your number is completely moot in this scenario as it's completely dependent on the type of game and how resource intensive it is. I could write a "game" that could exhaust a full server with 1 player (albeit poorly coded.. on purpose) or I could write one that was coded much nicer that could support 500 people. There are far too many variables to give an accurate number of what a VPS could support. Quote
Limey Packet Posted April 8, 2010 Author Report Posted April 8, 2010 Two unrelated VPS questions: 1. Is using a VPS for the equivalent of reseller hosting allowed? 2. Does Hawk Host's strict "no chats" rule apply to VPS's? Quote
