One of the bugs we started seeing as of PHP 5.2.13: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=51265 . This is not the first time there were crashes in PCRE either: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=39016 . There were some users using certain versions of wordpress that every time they visited a page PHP crashed. So tough to say lets run PHP 5.2.13 when a good chunk of users are using wordpress. Although after a while some users using newer versions of plugins and wordpress stopped getting it. So it's a difficult thing to deal with here damned if you do damned if you don't.

We do not have any for the hawk host brand at the moment we're working on fixing that. Might be a few weeks though too much is going on!

It's an alternative web server to Apache that supports all the features users typically use in Apache. It can be significantly faster than Apache and handle much more traffic with the same resources. People typically use it for high traffic web sites where they'd rather not spend more money on a more powerful server. You can read more information about it at http://www.litespeedtech.com/

There are bugs with PHP 5.2.12 and PHP 5.2.13 that on servers that are running those have caused issues for our users. So we're trying to figure out how we're going to address that problem on current machines seeing as how PHP crashing for users is not a good thing.

For hosting accounts there are bandwidth utilization warnings at 85%, 95% and 99% used. For resellers the account is not shutoff for being over your bandwidth. It just will not let you make new accounts and we could choose to charge for overage. Also for all accounts (shared and reseller) you can upgrade your account any time via our client area.
-
You cannot use our shared hosting servers for torrents. If you have VPS you could use them for torrents as it's your own machine you'd just potentially cause issues for yourself not others.
-
It should be fixed. Our load monitoring system was not properly monitoring a few select servers including this one. We're working on fixing it but we had some abusers on that server that have been taken care of now since we logged in and found them rather than relying on our own monitoring systems to handle it.

I haven't tried installatron so I can't comment on them. We're using Softaculous on all our shared and reseller servers and users are very impressed with it. It's significantly better than Fantastico.

At this time we do not provide java hosting.

Unfortunately we cannot disclose our customer web sites as that be a violation of our privacy policy. Also I don't know of anyone with testimonials who are using VPS's unfortunately. The speed test files would give you a good idea as far as speed of downloading: http://www.hawkhost.com/Network/index For speed of intensive applications since it's a VPS as long as you have the resources and it's not poorly made it should be fast. Meaning obviously if the script takes 10 seconds to load on an idle server somewhere right now it's not going to suddenly take 5 seconds on a VPS as resources are not the problem but poorly made script. Hopefully this is a little helpful.

Sorry I forgot to update this. About 10 minutes after all VPS's were online we confirmed all were functioning by logging into them. If you're experiencing any issues we recommend you contact support at this point.
-
All VPS's are now online. We're going to login to each just to confirm they're running fine but the server currently shows all as online so we have no reason to believe they would not be functioning.

We're working on bringing up all VPS's now. The memory replacement took a little longer than expected as the first replacement stick used the machine would not boot with.

The problem is the software supporting it. Everyone wants us to use cPanel it is a single server system besides dns and mysql unless you become very creative. With MySQL though lots of things assume localhost including plugins for cPanel so we could not support using a separate MySQL server either. The other issue with MySQL is if we were to build a MySQL system we'd make it extremely powerful that it would make sense to have more than one servers on it. Right now though that would cause conflicts potentially with usernames so that is not possible either. So basically what I am saying here is until cPanel supports it we cannot support it. Using another control panel software would be costly and there is only one out there HSphere which now is owned by a company not known for their customer service. Also all of this does not take into account the user applications themselves. So PHP scripts that make assumptions about things that in a clustered environment may not work. A lot of people set mysql localhost but that may not be the case is an easy one to fix. There are others though like assumptions about disk writing, mysql keys (so incremental may go +2 each time or something due to the use of replication)

The drives have been replaced and finished rebuilding so this is completed.

We have been notified by the raid card on the Bosco server that one drive on the system is reporting a large number of medium errors while another is reporting smart errors. As a result we will be replacing both drives immediately as we can hot swap them meaning no down time. We will replace the one with smart errors then allow for the new drive to rebuild then replace the one with medium errors and once again allow the drive to rebuild. While the new drives are rebuilding in each case restores may be slower than usual but nothing to extreme. Date: 05/21/2010 Start time (CST): 2:45pm End time (CST): ? Estimated Down Time: None

At this time we do not offer SSL certificates.

Hello, If you called about problems accessing your site and we linked it back to an issue with a machine than I imagine technicians were working on the issue instead. Then the issue was solved and if it was quite a ways later before someone was able to call back we'd avoid it. The reason being we don't know where you're from and if you include no information other than saying call me we'd rather not be waking someone up at 2am their time for example if we've solved the problem we believe the user was talking about. I'm wondering now have you ever opened a support ticket on our site? We primarily do not deal with support issues over the phone and we refer people to open tickets anyways as we have no way of tracking things. For example you say there is a server problem and you've called 5 times. Well each person you potentially talk to has no idea about the issue because there is no record. If you had tickets opened technician could go back and say yeah you'd had this issues a few time we'll escalate it see what's going on here. So basically what I'm saying here is I'd recommend opening a ticket at https://support.hawkhost.com/ or emailing us. One other note while not changing anything on your site there are ways you can make it much slower over time. If you have a blog and you're adding posts and have a poorly made plugin it maybe does not scale well and starts slowing down pages. Or you have a plugin it is connecting to something and it's slower thus the pages are slower. So when you have issues you really should open a support ticket. The server load could be low while the issue is specific to your site and we'd have no way of knowing this as we cannot possibly be checking everyones sites to make sure they're fast obviously. We just check the servers themselves.

May 25th between 9:00am EST and 12:00PM EST we will be replacing the memory on the Jedi server due to one of the sticks on the server failing. This is necessary maintenance due to the fact the bad stick of memory caused a crash and now the server is reporting the stick of memory as missing entirely. So right now it could be potentially causing stability issues as well as performance problems. We have no reason though to believe for the time being it'll be problematic which is why we're giving a weeks notice. It is however still something that must be done for the long term health of the server. The window is for 3 hours but we estimate that the memory replacement should take between 10 and 20 minutes. Then once that is done we'll bring all the VPS's back up which will most likely take another 10 minutes depending on the size of your VPS. We're estimating about 30 minutes of down time as a worst case scenario for certain VPS's. To address the concerns about the time of the window. For the majority of the server this appears to be the time when there is the least activity. It also allows us to have more technicians on to deal with potential problems users may experience with their VPS's if they're not setup to start up properly again after being restarted. If you have any questions or concerns about this maintenance window do not hesitate to contact support. Date: 05/25/2010 Start time (EST): 9:00am End time (EST): 12:00pm Duration: 3 hours Estimated Down Time: 30 Minutes

All VPS's have been back up for a little bit and we've been investigating the cause for the kernel panic. It appears that the memory in bank 8 has failed and caused the original panic and now is not even available to the system at all. So we will be scheduling a maintenance window in the next week to replace the memory on this server. When we have a concrete time on the window a new notice will be posted on the forum.
-
The machine is back online we're just working on bringing all the VPS's back online.
-
The Jedi server has crashed and upon investigation once we KVM'ed into the server it had kernel panic'ed. We've already rebooted the system and it should be back online within 15 minutes. We're sorry about any inconvenience this may cause but unfortunately some things are out of our control such as kernel panics.

There is no quick scheme to do it and also the rank doesn't mean a whole lot. It's just what you're at when the updating but obviously it's changing all the time. So I'd just post on forums things like that without being a spammer doing it. Then having content people like so they link to it places also helps.

This has been completed.

The Bosco machine will be upgraded today (May 8th 2010) which means for a few hours today availability of restores will be unavailable while we migrate the system to new hardware. The reason for this upgrade is to provide more space and more importantly improve the speeds of our backup systems The old machine had the following specifications Dual Xeon 5130 4GB RAM 12x1TB Raid-10 The new machine is the following: Dual Xeon 5520 12GB RAM 24x1TB Raid-10 As you can see it's a substantial upgrade from the previous server. This post will be updated when the upgrade has been completed.
