Mailing software & policy question

Hi there,

I'm looking for hosting which provides distribution lists where everyone can post (e.g. mailman or phplist). That will be the main purpose of the site. I'm wondering if that's acceptable for Hawk Host (I don't want to inadvertently break some ToS and have to move :P).

Currently, I foresee about 3-4 lists, with 100-300 persons per list (though this may increase in the future). So as long as the server or software is able to stagger the emails, the 1000 emails/hour limit is okay for now, but because they are discussion lists, and not announcements it would be nice to have a higher limit for transient periods of more discussion.

The main site is already hosted elsewhere (cfms.org) and we're a non-profit organization where the lists would double opt-in and be for interest groups (we already have a few lists established, but at the current site where its hosted, the lack of such software makes it nearly impossible to manage).

Thanks for your time

We support mailman and phplist they're both fine. You're correct about the 1000 emails per hour but assuming it's staggered it should not be an issue. Obviously we have a 0 tolerance policy towards spam so I would make sure that the users opted into the mailing.

I believe mailman itself does not support throttling email. I was wondering whether it can be set up for us (to keep it under the 1000 limit), or we'd have to set it up ourselves (e.g. through the mail transfer agent). On that last note, what do your servers come pre-installed with? (I assume sendmail)

Are we talking about shared hosting or a VPS? With mailman there is no capability that's right and I do not believe you could make it restrict on shared hosting. Maybe a VPS is better as there are no mailing restrictions as all you cause problems for is yourself if you're using all the resources up.

For the Basic shared hosting plan, is there a email number limit for SMTP sending out?

Recently I wrote post to introduce/promote Hawkhost on my own website, some readers want to know if there is a email limit, because they want to use Newsletter to communicate with members. The email number is about 50,000 each batch, and one batch a week.

I did not found the exact number of email limit on SMTP server on your descriptions.

Could you please give me some accurate numbers?

Thanks.

It's been updated now to have both reflect the right number.  We're planning a big overhaul of our KB soon :)  It's long overdue we have a lot of older articles that no longer are relevant due to changes in technology or policies.

Clarification from support:

1. The email limit on our shared hosting and Reseller account is 500 mails per hour.

2. Yes, it applies to both Mailman and SMTP.

3. It applies to your individual cPanel accounts and not Reseller as a whole.

Support was correct of course :)
