Cody R. got a reaction from Gavybeerwarse in Machine Slowness [08/19/2010]
Earlier this morning Mars experienced a brief bout of slowness / crashed. After a reboot everything is online and optimal.
It appears the issue was something exhausted all of the memory in the server rapidly causing SWAP usage / high disk IO that ultimately brought the machine to a halt. We're currently investigating the origins.

You'll always run into resource issues if your forum has a lot of plugins / the database gets large. The best way to curb resource usage is to utilize caching that's provided by the software / don't blindly install massive amounts of plugins.

Cody R. got a reaction from woodhzah in SSH Temporarily Disabled
We've temporarily disabled SSH across all machines as a precaution due to a recent exploit / 0-Day (released before being patched) in the wild. We'll update this thread once SSH has been enabled.
This does not affect our VPS servers.

Mars came under a large distributed denial of service attack around 10:00AM EST - we mitigated it within a few minutes. There may have been a brief period of slowness or service outage as a result.
We're currently monitoring the service and working with data center technicians to fully mitigate the attack.
We'll leave this ticket open for 24 hours until we can confirm service is full restored and back to normal.

We'll be performing a kernel upgrade on on Thursday April 12th between 10PM-1AM CDT. While we use KSplice to keep our kernels up-to-date for critical bugs and security fixes it doesn't pull in new features from the upstream kernel. As a result we perform semi-annual kernel updates to keep everything up-to-date and in-line with upstream.

Cody R. got a reaction from Kyuubi in 81.67 % up time
I'm not sure what to tell you without a ticket sir. It's abundantly clear that there haven't been any ongoing issues with the server you're on as noted by our internal monitoring and third party monitoring (posted above).
Also as noted previously we do 1-minute interval checks on an HTTP page to ensure the web server is functioning as well as ICMP to ensure the machine and network is online. Beyond this we do monitor other metrics (server resources) however there have been no issues on that front either.
Taking a peak at your domain you're using CloudFlare which has had some serious issues lately (primarily Europe / Asia). Your outages likely stem from this. Please evaluate your current setup before pointing fingers. We have not had the outages you think we do.

https://twitter.com/#!/CloudFlare/status/198123182841016320
You can't assume we're having downtime / issues when you're not using our name servers as that's outside of our network and will cause outages which are out of our control.
