Appaliafat reacted to FlashLight in Increase in Joomla Hack Activity in 2013
Hi Folks,
I'm sharing my experiences in hope that it will help another HawkHost user and save them a lot of time and worry.
I have had 4 different Joomla 1.5 sites attacked since January, all with variations of the same hack.
According the the Joomla community there has been a spike in these 'Hmei7' attacks since January. I found some info here that might be helpful to others with the same problem:
There is info here on how to start the clean up:
http://www.joshpate.com/2013/01/how-to-fix-hacked-by-hmei7-on-joomla-web-site/
http://blog.cripperz.sg/2013/01/12/how-to-fix-hacked-by-hmei7%E2%80%B3-on-joomla-web-site/
Also, once it is cleared up and Joomla updated to 1.5.26 (for those running 1.5) there are three extensions that are useful and cost effective:
JHackGuard (free): protects against common hack attempts.
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/site-protection/13233
AdminToolsPro (small subscription required): adds a firewall and automatically blocks IPs etc.
https://www.akeebabackup.com/products/admin-tools.html
JSecure Lite (free): changes the default Admin login page to something of your choice:
http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/access-a-security/site-security/login-protection/23080
The last one is particularly useful as after installing AdminToolsPro and setting it up to notify me with failed Admin logins I could see that some sites were getting hammered with password guessing scripts. This dealt with that problem immediately.
Hope this helps someone.
Thanks.
Andy

Appaliafat reacted to Cannor in Calling wp-cron.php using a real cron job - wget or curl?
Hi everyone.
Recently, my wp-cron.php mysteriously stopped working, and after a bit of digging I found this was the cause of all the "Missed Schedule" errors I was getting for scheduled posts in WordPress.
I found how to set up a manual cron in CPanel using wget to call wp-cron.php every X minutes, although I've also seen a method that uses curl. Is one better for use with HawkHost than the other, or doesn't it matter?
Cheers!

Appaliafat reacted to Tony in File System Maintenance [11/21/2012]
On Wednesday November 21st starting at 9am pst we will be taking the sjc003 server down to run a file system check on one of the partitions the operating system is reporting to have issues. This is necessary maintenance as otherwise the problem could result in an unplanned outage and potential data loss if it's a file system check is not done within a reasonable timeframe. We've set aside a window of 3 hours meaning the window ends at 12pm pst. We estimate the actual file system check will take about an hour and a half to be completed. We scheduled the window based on the usage patterns of this system where during this window it sees significantly less traffic than the rest of the day.
Date: 11/20/2012
Start time (PST): 9:00am
End time (PST): 12:00pm
Duration: 3 hours
Estimated Down Time: 120 minutes

It would be really handy if there was better sub-account management from the web interface.
It would be good if we could edit the details or delete sub-accounts.

Appaliafat reacted to klyxmaster in domain redirect
I did not see a topic for domain, just hosting, so hope it is ok to post here.
Second i searched like crazy in the faq's and support so maybe this is not an option with HH.
I have had several domains over the years. I like HH simplicity and fast response times. My question is this:
Yahoo, GD and others have a section when you purchase a domain to redirect it somewhere.
example i have abc.com (no hosting) and I can point it to blogger if i want or my own hosting from my homne server etc..
On HH i cannot find this feature. Does this mean it is not available? Only thing I see are name servers. Ironically I want the new domain to point to a sub directory of my other domain (hosted here at HH). I have one for one biz, and I got antoher domain so i can have the 2nd biz in another folder.
how can I do this?
