  1. Notice posted: http://forums.hawkhost.com/showthread.php?t=907

Basically 15K SAS over 10K SATA drives is the only change.

Good call. I applaud the move.

Well this is pretty amusing we deployed the replacement Pluto only to discover a failed drive! It died literally after deployment. So much for SAS being more reliable the name Pluto is what's cursed!

And a good thing, too, that you have a sense of humor to carry you through Pluto's unbelievably bad luck.

  2. A WP user had the same error while trying to save his post so he changed the post title to a single word, saved the post, published post, and re-edited the title back to its original. It was probably a bad character in the title that caused the error.

There are many issues that could cause a "408 request time out" error. I'd recommend you submit a support ticket with details on the problem. The support staff are quite good and could probably solve the issue more quickly.

  3. On the blog end, not so well.

If HawkHost is a happening host, then why isn't something ALWAYS happening at HawkHost?

If you apply the above criteria laid out by Cody to HawkHost's blog, then shouldn't HawkHost have something to blog about every single day?

I think the frequency of their blog posting is fine. I would rather they post something worth reading than post daily for the sake of posting. As an analogy, would you like to converse with someone who talks a lot but really saying nothing worthwhile? Hearing all that empty chatter is bound to switch one off.

I believe a lot of things are happening in Hawk Host and they can't possibly blog about every single happening because sometimes certain things must be kept secret until it's time to reveal.

Blogging well and sensibly takes time and effort. Maybe available time to blog is what they don't have a lot of since they have to relate and respond to so many customers. All of us have the same amount of time but each of us have a different set of priorities. Who am I to say their priorities is not right if it doesn't agree with mine?

  4. Your forums, here, have a section titled "Customer Reviews." Yet, all of the reviews of customer experiences that are posted in the forums here are not located in this forum. An example of this can be found here:

    http://forums.hawkhost.com/showthread.php?t=206

Wouldn't it make more sense to move such postings to the Customer Reviews section?

That's an excellent suggestion! It would make it so much easier for prospective customers to find reviews. Hawk Host has some really awesome stellar reviews and it would be a grave pity for them to be buried among all other threads.

So...I did a quick search through the forum and here is a list of all reviews:

    http://forums.hawkhost.com/showthread.php?t=23

    http://forums.hawkhost.com/showthread.php?t=91 (review + suggestions)

    http://forums.hawkhost.com/showthread.php?t=498

This should help them with moving the review threads to the "Customer Review" section.

  5. ... if you are sharing an instance of MySQL across multiple customers, which seems like a truly terrible, terrible idea ...

It may be truly terrible, terrible to you, but if you were to carefully think about it (I assume you have the capacity to think but I could be wrong), you will realize that...

it is definitely and absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt,

a practical, functional, commonsensical, feasible, sensible, and workable solution for shared hosting as implemented by 100% of web hosts globally.

  6. Such errors are rather baffling.

The other reason I can think of that could possibly cause this error is that your account is not enabled to allow Addon Domains.

I think Hawk Host support staff are in a better position to help you at this point. Do submit a support ticket and see what they say about it. They may even have helped other customers with similar issues.

  7. Have you updated your domain's nameservers to point to Hawk Host's nameservers? This is done at your domain registrar. It can take about 24 to 72 hours for domain nameservers to be propagated, although some domain registrars are faster than others.

The best way to check if the propagation has been completed is to ping your domain and ensure the IP address is the same as your nameserver.

If you're still having problems, it's best to submit a support ticket and the support staff should be able to help you.

  8. I just like pro active solutions over reactive ones so going to find a way to stop them.

    Good idea.

I know spammers don't give up easily, but we could make life difficult for them.

Like... setting the "Maximum Recipients to Send PMs at a time" to 1. That will make their spamming activity more tedious.

And to make it even more laborious for them :D, include a value for "Message Throttle Quantity" as well.

  9. Got another spam PM. I don't see a report button anywhere. The only options I have are to reply or forward. Please be specific on what steps to take.

Besides reporting it as spam, you can delete the spam PM from the Inbox view where it shows a list of PMs:

    1) Click on the box at the extreme right side to highlight the message.

    2) Look for the 'Selected Messages:' prompt which is shown below the list of messages.

    3) Select the 'Delete' option for 'Selected Messages:'.

    4) Click on 'Go' button and ...Voil

  10. Fantastico is a relic.

lol, that is so apt! I couldn't have put it any better.

Good to know that Hawk Host is considering other auto installers to replace Fantastico.

Like many, I was impressed by the list of scripts that Softaculous can auto-install but as I delve deeper, I found that people experienced a lot of problems using it, e.g. blank databases created, security issues, wrong permissions, manual installs work but auto-installs don't, etc. Scripts are very quickly added to Softaculous more for show than making the scripts work. An irresponsible development team usually leaves much of the testing to their endusers. It is true no software is perfect but one can usually tell how little testing is done by the blatant errors discovered.

    Softaculous Admin Demo:

    - information on installed application script is very brief, barely any info at all - just shows the directory where it is installed and its version number. No database info which I think should be available.

    - clicked on Updates icon on the top menu. After the updates, whatever menu option I clicked on display a 403/404 error. Subsequently I was unable to return to the Admin Demo as it displays 403 & 404 errors as well. It was not a good experience for me.

    Installatron Demo:

    - functions worked as it should

    - no errors nor unpleasant surprises

    - although more steps, they do help to provide structure and organization which is a good thing

    - allows installation of scripts with earlier releases

I prefer Installatron for the following reasons:

    - better design and workflow

    - options to backup and restore a web application's data. Can select which files/tables to be restored

    - PHP Safe Mode and PHP Register Globals can be set on a per-install basis

    - more stable and reliable

    - brandable

Installatron's features list are detailed and more thorough compared to the superficial coverage of the few features in Softaculous. It is quite obvious that more thought has been given to Installatron's design than that of Softaculous.

Softaculous' selling points are its support for 100+ scripts but do we really need all of that? Non-techies tend to go with the most popular scripts. Techies are the ones likely to explore and most of the time, they can do manual installs easily. As for demos/ratings/reviews, once again these features are nice to have but adds no value to the basic function of an auto-installer or to the workflow. I see these features as a lot of hype with very little value.

Anyways, it would be a good idea to initially have both Fantastico and Installatron/Softaculous (whichever HH finally decides on) available and gradually face out Fantastico. This will give the Fantastico diehards (if any) some time to get comfortable using a new auto installer.

  11. Apparently there are two ways to allow embedding of videos in forums:

    1) BB code - several developers have created BB codes such as:

    • ... - specifically for youtube videos
    • ... or [m]...[/m] - supports wider range of videos.

You will need to download the code and install it via AdminCP before it can be used. See http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=219139

    2) Automatic Media Embedding - this is really neat. It "smartly scans new and edited posts for URLs from a customisable variety of web sites (i.e. YouTube or Amazon or about 200 others). If it finds a match, AME will 'transform' the URL into inline embedded media without your users ever having to even think about it." This is a vbulletin plugin that needs to be installed - see http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=202476

Any possibility of doing one of the above?

  12. Some couldn't believe the photo is real - they think it's been photoshopped.

Looks real enough as there are two photos of the bitten shark taken at different angles. See http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2699860/Attack-sparks-killer-shark-fears.html for the other perspective. One wonders why thesun named the picture as Fake-shark-pic_682_915958a.jpg

Apparently the shark-netters have started hunting for the monster shark.

But it might have been an orca that bit the shark. Couldn't it?

  13. I think Hawk Host should first consider Cloud Hosting as it is fast gaining in popularity due to its many advantages:

    - automatically reacts and allocates more resources from its resource pool to the website as and when it is needed

    - website is very fast as it can use the massive resources of the Cloud at anytime, hence no more slow loading pages or downtime

    - choose either Linux or Windows hosting on the cloud

    - run Linux and Windows scripts on the same website from the same folder

    - access new and old technologies such as PHP4, PHP5, etc

    - no need to move from shared hosting to vps to dedicated as our website grows.

Cloud Computing is such a beautiful and simple concept. How can we ignore it?

We cannot disregard Windows Hosting as Microsoft is a very big player in the IT industry. At the same time, Windows Hosting on traditional servers has several problems such as:

    - not as stable as Unix

    - slower than Unix servers

    - resource intensive

    - more reboots required, which means more downtime.

I don't see why Hawk Host should waste time and money on setting up Windows Hosting using traditional hosting methods knowing the kind of problems Windows Hosting has. I would think most of these problems would be solved with Cloud Hosting. It makes sense to me to first implement Cloud Hosting and then offer Windows Hosting as an option under it.

Hawk Host has established itself as a hosting company keen on the latest technology as seen from the recent server hardware upgrades. Besides using the latest hardware technology, they should also think about using the latest hosting technology...Cloud Computing.
