Today's Rant: #$@$%&^*( GoDaddy...

So I've had a Domain name hosted at Hawkhost, codesweep.com for some time now. Though the registrar was Namesecure.com. I decide that for Registrar GoDaddy was cheaper and codesweep.com was up for renewal soon, so let's transfer over there. No problem, I gather up all the pertinent info and am told in a few days Namesecure will release to GoDaddy.

So I just get home from a late night at the office, and check my email, nothing is working....hmmm...is it HawkHost, My Internet Provider (Comcast), or something else...this was answered really quickly when I tried visiting www.codesweep.com and got the GoDaddy parking page instead of my Blog...WTF?? I'm POSITIVE I told GoDaddy to keep my nameservers at Hawkhost the same...how long was my email down? How many people were bouncing back? Hopefully not too many...well a quick swap of the nameservers will slowly fix that but still....

Anyways not much Hawkhost could have done about that, but had to get it off my chest....outta curiousity whom else do people use for registrars around here?

I have to take the opportunity to plug our services and point you to https://my.hawkhost....mainchecker.php -- that said, a lot of people want to keep their hosting and registrar separate, which is entirely understandable.

Personally I've used Network Solutions and NetEarthOne in the past and have nothing negative to say about either company. Shame to hear about the poor GoDaddy experience :(

Definitely a thought, but a few things will have to happen first before you get to be registrar:

1) Stick around another year or 2...I don't have a problem integrating host and registrar, but registrars in particular need to be mature companies.

2) Do you offer a privacy service similar to GoDaddy's DomainsByProxy service? Don't like my personal details listed in WHOIS if at all possible...

Absolutely fair point. We've been doing this since 2004 for what it's worth (http://www.hawkhost.com/About/past) -- definitely not as long as some of the 'big boys' (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Network Solutions etc.) but we're past the infancy/startup phase.

We do indeed, whois protection is included with all domains that support it at no additional cost. You can enable/disable it at any time in your account.

Though I must say I get a chuckle out of this :P

We had a chance to become ICANN accredited however we opted out of it at the time as our primary business was around hosting (and still is). We currently are a client of NetEarthOne who are ICANN accredited and have been in the business for numerous years. Registering a domain through us essentially is the same as registering through NetEarthOne (currently, this can change in the future).

Regardless you're absolutley right.

Though I must say I get a chuckle out of this :P

We've had internal discussions about moving registrars. Ultimately it boiled down to "don't fix what's not broken". The irony is not lost on us.

Heh, if my experience moving codesweep.com was any indication the consequences for a botched move on Hawkhost.com could be a disaster if a similar stunt were pulled. My advice would be to leave it alone unless Godaddy screws you over bad enough to where it's worth it :-)

Oops I forgot to address your other question! You can get free WHOIS privacy through us - just toggle it via the billing area or contact support. This is the same thing as GoDaddy's DomainsByProxy :).
