We will be upgrading the Mars server starting on Thursday January 8th. We will be upgrading the machine to a Intel Xeon 5430 (2.66ghz) machine. It'll see it's move to 64bit which should hopefully provide a performance improvement there as well. Various other components will also be upgraded but not worth talking about such as a newer raid card and hard drives. We'll do this upgrade by moving everyone to a new server already configured so there should be almost no down time.

Along with this move as we migrate users to the new machine they will be greeted with LiteSpeed. This will provide we hope a significant speed improvement for all users. This will also move us one step closer to having all machines once again on the same configuration.

For this move we expect no more than 5 minutes of down time for any site. The reason being we will re-route the IP a site is on once we've moved the site. We are estimating this will take us a maximum of three days but we hope to have this done within two days.

We're sorry about the late notice on this but we do not expect any service interruption at all. If you have any questions about this do not hesitate to contact us.

Date: 01/08/2009

Start Date: 01/08/2009

End Date: 01/11/2009

Estimated Down Time: less than 5 minutes

Duration: 3 days

3 percent done thus far! It was only started about 30 minutes ago however so we may actually finish this much faster than before. The reason being our migration tools have been much improved since we last migrated an entire server.

40% completed.

Doesn't always move as fast as we'd like since some users have just big files others have a million small files thus it takes forever. Our goal is to have this done by tomorrow rather than the 11th. So hopefully it's that way so we can move onto the next machine.

50% completed or so at this point. We'll have everything moved some time tomorrow at this rate as things were not started until about 2pm yesterday (1:30am on the 9th already!)

No issues have been reported so seems a smooth transition thus far :)
