Has anyone done it successfully? Some hosts have policies that don't allow MU on shared, only VPS. What about hawkhost? Has anyone installed WP MU + domain mapping on shared? Is it possible to do it at all?

We support this on our shard plans so you can install it and it'll work just fine. You just need to be careful as far as resources go though since WPMU can cause higher resource use.
