Flashrip has a quite simple aim: to allow you to download movies from YouTube and convert them to MP3 or an AVI file. Because while it is easy to view a video in your web browser (assuming you've got the Flash plugin), should you have the ability to download the video, you'll generally find it's in the FLV container, and not every movie player knows what to do with that. So Flashrip serves two purposes, actually: letting you play just the sound (converting to MP3), and allowing you effortlessly play the video on pretty much all your apparatus or players (changing to AVI).
