]]>2116Fri, 13 Apr 2012 10:48:17 +0000Hardware Migration [01/09/2012] - [01/11/2012]https://forums.hawkhost.com/topic/1949-hardware-migration-01092012-01112012/Starting on Monday January 9th we will be migrating the Mustang server to new higher end hardware as well as better system configuration. We feel this will benefit all users on the Mustang server. We estimate this will be completed no later than Wednesday January 11th.

We expect no more than 5 minutes of downtime per account as we will be moving accounts to the new server then re-routing the IP address to the new hardware. This means there will be no changes to DNS and as a result no dns progation issues. In our experience our migration method means the large majority of users will not even realize that they've switched servers. If you do however run into any issues do not hesitant to contact us as our system administrators are prepared to resolve any issues experienced.

The new Mustang server will be similar to that of our recent deployment of servers:

Old Mustang:

Dual Xeon E5520

24GB RAM

4x300GB Raid-10

New Mustang:

Dual Xeon X5670

24GB RAM

4x600GB Raid-10

So this is a pretty big upgrade as it will have four additional CPU cores with 8 to the operating system counting hyper threading. It will also be using 600GB disks over 300GB disks of the old system.

Once the migration starts the current Mustang system will be named oldmustang while the new one will become Mustang this is one thing to keep in mind during the migration.

Adding the additional memory will require the machine to be turned off so there will be between 30 and 45 minutes of down time.

We do not expect any down time during the maintenance window. We will be upgrading the system PHP to the latest version first then the web servers so for a short time there may be different versions handling cron jobs and web server requests. The reason for this is to get various fixes for LSAPI as well as general PHP fixes as well.

While we use KSplice to keep our kernels up-to-date for critical bugs and security fixes it doesn't pull in new features from the upstream kernel. As a result we perform semi-annual kernel updates to keep everything up-to-date and in-line with upstream.

The window is for 3 hours however we estimate there will only be about 10 minutes of downtime while we reboot the server in order to load the CloudLinux kernel. CloudLinux will allow for us to better control resources being utilized by users as well as to better track the usage. This should result in an even more stable environment where single users will be unable to cause service degradation in most situations where typically a technician would be required to intervene to stop any service degradation a user may be causing. With this change a user who is using an abnormal amount of resources will see strictly their website slow down rather than the entire server slowing down.

We estimate this will result in about 10 minutes of down time while the server reboots. Even though we're running Ksplice to minimize reboots we like to do an update every time there is a major operating system update. In this case CentOS 5.5 was released so we'd like to run the latest 5.5 kernel to get any non security related improvements which Ksplice does not do as it's strictly for security updates.

We've seen two small outages in the past 48 hours on the public network of this server for no apparent reason when looking at the server itself. We're seeing disregarded packets at the switch level which suggests there could be a problem causing not only network problems but potentially intermittent packet loss. We're working on tracking this down which could mean small periods of increased latency and or down time while we attempt to find the actual cause.
