Memory Replacement [11/18/2012]

The Raptor server has had several sticks of memory fail that need to be replaced. We have scheduled this to be replaced Sunday November 18th between 1am CST and 4am CST. This is necessary maintenance as the server is currently not running with an optimal amount of memory. We estimate that the server will be down for about 45 minutes while all the server memory is replaced.

Emergency File System Maintenance [11/16/2012]

At approximately 7:15pm CST system administrators were informed by monitoring to file system problems with the Raptor VPS node. Upon attempting to login to the system it became apparent that a fsck would be necessary to repair file system inconsistencies. We've taken the server offline and we expect the fsck to take no longer than 2 hours to complete.

We will be updating the kernel on the Raptor VPS node to the latest version between 11:00PM and 1:00AM CDT.

The maintenance window is for 2 hours however the estimated downtime is 5 to 10 minutes.

Emergency Kernel Update [09/21/2010] - [09/22/2010]

We will be updating the kernel on the Raptor VPS node to the latest version between 9:00pm and 1:00am CDT. The reason for this is for security reasons while we do use ksplice the age of the kernel and the time it takes to patch this system at this point makes sense to just update the kernel itself. Even if we had to patch the system the virtual machines on it would have had to be all taken off line in order to do the updates at this point. So we believe it would be wise to just do an actual kernel update.

The maintenance window is for 4 hours but we estimate the down time will only be 5 minutes for the node and between 20 and 30 minutes for all virtual machines to be up and running again.

Hardware Migration [01/26/2010]

We will be migrating the Raptor node to new hardware starting on January 26th and we estimate it will take no longer than 24 hours to complete.

There will be about 5 minutes of downtime this migration we will move VPS's using the migration tools in OpenVZ to minimize the impact of the move as much as possible. We're sorry about the late notice but due to it's minimal impact we'd rather not delay a necessary migration.

24GB RAM

4x300GB SAS Raid-10

So this is a significant jump in specifications on this node.

There will be emergency network maintenance on FCR02 which our Raptor server is on. This window is on Monday November 30th starting at 1:00am CST and lasting until 2:00am CST. Although the window is for 1 hour we estimate that there will only be a down time of 15-20 minutes. This maintenance is necessary to correct an issue that could cause network interruptions that would not be scheduled.

Raptor Outage [04/18/2009]

At around 10:40PM EST on April 18th our Raptor VPS node kernel paniced. This meant that the entire system became inaccessible requiring a reboot of the system. After the reboot the system was able to start back up with no issue and is currently restoring services. The process of restarting every VM will take some time we're keeping a close eye on this to make sure all of them start back up.

This affected not only the node but our web site as well which runs on this node currently.

We'll continue to update this post about the progress of starting back up all VM's.
