shared hosting vs semi dedicated

Hi Hawkhost Team

Sorry for my english

I'm planning to upgrade to semi dedicated in maybe 2-3 month because my site getting slower, i believe maybe because of my bad coding.

I know little of server, so maybe VPS its not for me because maybe i cannot operate it well and i like to use cpanel because its simple.

Right now, my site sometime take 20 sec to load, Cpanel resource usage show no issue, CPU load always at 0-25% when i check.

I think maybe because i use mysql query too much and right now im still disabling a lot of feature to make it faster.

I have a question how much power difference between shared hosting vs semi dedicated ? (3, 4 or 5 more powerful than shared hosting?)

Can i just use it like in shared hosting (cpanel) ?

Is it easy to upgrade / migrate ? Just wait and i maybe just make a few modification until my site moved?

Can i downgrade it to my previous shared hosting? (i hope this will never happen)

Thank You.

1 more question, how many user can shared hosting handle ?

When i check in google analytic in Real Time, at noon sometime my site have 90-110 user at peak and 60-70 when not peak

Now after my site getting slower only 60-80 at peak and 40-50 when not peak

Likely this is the first thing I would look at before upgrading, if you're not sure yourself, get a pro to review it for you (sorry, no time here  :) )

At least double because of the second CPU they give you, however no amount of hardware can replace crappy code, see above post.

Semi-dedicated hosting runs in Cpanel, yes.

Never tried, but I'm sure it's a no-brainer for the HawkHost tech team with no action on your part and negligible downtime if any.

You'll need to ask HawkHost.

Thank You.

Hard to answer this, if all you did was serve static HTML, the server wouldn't break a sweat.  However 1 user with really crappy code in the backend can bring a server to its knees as well.  Hawkhost does a pretty good job of "Jailing" users so they don't interfere with others on a Shared plan, however depending on the situation one person could bring your end of the server to its knees quite well.

Thank you for all your reply tekiegreg

I will try to fix my bad coding. Right now, im still disabling lots of feature by removing mysql_num_rows, affected_rows, reduce report, remove checking for new messages and others...

My site will have less feature but hopefully at least my user will not waiting 20 sec just to open a page.

@tekiegreg thank you for the assistance, very helpful and informative.

@lusiano if you haven't already please contact our support team about this. If it's a code/MySQL query issue upgrading to SD might not fix the problem since a lot of those limits are the same. If you're not currently maxing your CPU then doubling it may be ineffective. We can check out our logs and look for slow/inefficient queries and maybe something will catch our eye.

Hi Mr Brian, Thank you for your reply

Right now my site is doing well again.

I already remove some of mysql, mainly mysql_num_rows, i dont know if this help but my site is already fast again now.

Its good to know that shared and SD have the same limit, thats mean shared is as good as SD.

Thank You very much.

That's not entirely true. The SD plans do provide more CPU, guaranteed SSD based caching, and more MySQL concurrent connections. The point I was trying to make was that if you have very inefficient code or you're running some poorly constructed MySQL queries, the upgrade to the SD plan may not necessarily fix the issue.
