I am a customer, but some friends of mine ask if would it be possible to purchase only an AlphaSSL certificate for a forum hosted elsewhere.

They also ask who is the authority releasing certificates...

You can purchase a SSL certificate from us and host it elsewhere that is fine. As for the releasing authority that would be GlobalSign.
